Kurt Busch Fastest In First Test

Texas Thursday Test #1 Speeds

Kurt Busch #78 Car

This weekend, NASCAR decided to give the Sprint Cup Series teams a whole bunch of track time in preparation for the NRA 500 on Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway. On Thursday, there were two sessions on track that totaled 3-and-a-half hours long. There are also two official practices scheduled for Friday at Texas before qualifying. Below you will find the speeds for the first test session on Thursday. These were not televised. The ten-lap average chart for this test can be found below the full speed chart.

Kyle Busch Gets Win in Wild Fontana Race [Full Auto Club 400 Results and Recap]

Credit: Chris Graythen/Getty Images

It almost seemed scripted. With half a lap to go, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano were fighting for the lead–and bumping each other for the second week in a row. They made contact, going into the wall, and Kyle Busch benefited the most, taking the win he deserved. Busch, who led 125 of the 200 laps, got Joe Gibbs Racing into victory lane for the first time at Auto Club Speedway. Logano finished 6th, and Denny Hamlin got put on a stretcher. On Monday, it was reported that Hamlin has a compression fracture in his back.

Other Important Happenings:

Lap 29 – David Stremme spins out, bringing out the first caution. The two guys who started in the back, Brad Keselowski and Greg Biffle, were up to 14th and 18th, respectively.
Lap 37 – Caution #2, Timmy Hill blows an engine. Quite a few drivers reported either hitting the wall or hitting something on the track at this time, too, including Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, and Kyle Busch.
Lap 71 – Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick are caught speeding on pit road. Busch was in the mid-20s at the time and Harvick was inside the top 5.
Lap 90 – Debris caution. During the pit stops, Brad Keselowski is caught speeding on pit road and has to restart at the rear of the field (31st).
Lap 104 – Paul Menard, who was running round the top 15, hits the wall and has to pit because of a flat tire. He goes a lap down.
Lap 112 – Matt Kenseth makes an unscheduled pit stop because of a possible rear tire going down. He was running 10th when him and Greg Biffle made contact a lap or two before.
Lap 116 – Joe Nemechek bounces off the wall and brings out another caution. This is perfect timing for Matt Kenseth, who gets his lap back. Paul Menard took the wave around. During pit stops, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s crew had some trouble with a tire and he lost a ton of spots. He was running 3rd and came out 22nd.
Lap 130 – Marcos Ambrose has a flat tire and brings out another caution. He was running in 17th at the time.
Lap 164 – During green flag stops, Mark Martin is caught speeding on pit road. He was running around 20th at the time.
Lap 170 – Marcos Ambrose blows out a tire and brings out another caution. Most cars pit and there are a bunch on different tires strategies for the run to the checkers.
Lap 176 – Mark Martin breaks something in his rear end and goes across the track, taking out David Gilliland.
Lap 185 – Clint Bowyer blows an engine to bring out another caution. He was running 10th at the time. Everyone pitted except for Kyle Busch, Logano, Stewart, Kurt Busch, Keselowski, Harvick, Bowyer, and McMurray. Newman gets caught speeding on pit road.
Lap 194 – Brad Keselowski is off pace. He was running 10th.
Lap 200 - Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin are fighting for the lead when they make contact. Logano hits the wall hard and Hamlin spins into the inside wall, also with a very, very hard hit. Kyle Busch passes both for the win.

Auto Club 400 Starting Lineup

Denny Hamlin #11 Car

Qualifying isn’t quite as important at Auto Club Speedway as it is at, say, Bristol, but there is still some advantage to putting down a fast lap on Friday, such as a good pit selection. Denny Hamlin was the fastest man in town today, grabbing his third career pole (and second straight) at this 2-mile California race track. Notable drivers that will have to start from the rear of the field on Sunday are Greg Biffle and Brad Keselowski, both due to engine changes. They qualified 2nd and 3rd, respectively, and will get those spots when it comes to pit stall selection.

Keselowski Changing Engines At Fontana

Brad Keselowski #2 Car

Brad Keselowski just tweeted that the #2 team will change engines before qualifying today at Auto Club Speedway. He will join Greg Biffle at the rear of the field on Sunday. Both teams will be able to keep their “pick selection position,” which is determined by the qualifying results. More details will be added to this article as they become available.

Weekly NASCAR Poll Question: Was Hamlin’s Fine Justified?

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin in garage at Daytona
Do you agree with NASCAR's fine?
.

News broke on Thursday that NASCAR has fined Denny Hamlin $25,000 for his comments after last week’s race at Phoenix regarding the new Generation-6 cars. Here’s what Hamlin, who finished 3rd after starting in the rear of the field, had to say:

I don’t want to be the pessimist, but it did not race as good as our generation five cars. This is more like what the generation five was at the beginning. The teams hadn’t figured out how to get the aero balance right. Right now, you just run single-file and you cannot get around the guy in front of you. You would have placed me in 20th-place with 30 (laps) to go, I would have stayed there — I wouldn’t have moved up. It’s just one of those things where track position is everything.

UPDATE: Denny Hamlin has reportedly said that he will not pay the fine and that NASCAR can suspend him. More details are sure to emerge soon…

UPDATE #2: Hamlin took to Twitter on Thursday night to release this statement:

The short of the long of it is I believe I was severely disrespected by NASCAR by getting fined. I believe that the simple fact of us not even having a conversation about this issue before I was hit with a fine has something to say about our relationship. What I said was 1 sentence taken completely out of context. Most drivers will tell you that we constantly have our AND nascars best interest in mind when speaking. On the other hand I am a person that worked very hard from the BOTTOM to get where I am today and someone telling me that I can give my 100 percent honest opinion really bothers me. Since being fined in 2010 I have been a lot more careful about what I say to media and I felt this past weekend felt completely in my rights to give a assessment of the question asked. I feel as if today NASCAR lost one of its biggest supporters vocally of where our sport is headed. So in the end there are no winners. I said today I would not pay the fine. I stand by that and will go through the process of appealing. Trust me, this is not about the money.. It’s much deeper. I will now shift my focus on giving FedEx and my team what they deserve this weekend, a win.

After Thursday’s first 3.5-hour test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the teams got a 30-minute break before the track was open again for test session #2, which lasted an additional 3 hours. This week will be the first race on an intermediate track for the Generation-6 race cars, and NASCAR decided to let all of the teams get a whole bunch of track time in preparation for it. These speeds do not count as “official practice speeds” for the weekend, as these were simply test sessions. Early on in this test, it was reported that Juan Montoya had blown an engine. It was later revealed  however, that oil got on his engine and caused smoke, which made people believe his engine had blown. That was not the case.

Who Should Be Strong This Week?

Fantasy NASCAR Preview: Phoenix – Subway Fresh Fit 500

Subway-Fresh-Fit-5002

Now that we’re past the first unpredictable plate race of the season, it’s time for fantasy racers to buckle down and get series. Last week at Daytona, the Toyotas–specifically those in the Joe Gibbs camp–had various problems that has to make you wonder whether or not they will carry into Phoenix this weekend. Remember that, to the dismay of fantasy owners, Kyle Busch continually had engine problems in 2012.

Phoenix International Raceway was repaved and reconfigured during the 2011 season, and the changes were so drastic that I don’t think that it is worth really looking at race results here before then. The Cup Series has now had three races on this “new” track, with Kasey Kahne, Denny Hamlin, and Kevin Harvick being the drivers who have visited victory lane in those events.

Weekend Schedule: Practice on Friday starting at 2:00 pm and lasting until 3:25 pm followed by qualifying on at 6:00 pm. On Saturday, there is an hour-long practice set to begin at noon followed by final practice going from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. All times are in Eastern. The Subway Fresh Fit 500 is set to go green around 3:00 pm on Sunday.

The Favorites

Denny Hamlin - Hamlin is arguably the best in the series on this “new” Phoenix race track. In the three races here since the repavement/reconfiguration, Denny has led 107 laps and posted a 2nd-place finish last fall to go with his win here last spring–the first of his career at this track. Hamlin was unstoppable on the flat tracks in 2012 (there was only one race he finished worse than 6th) and that should carry into this season as well. The #11 Toyota should be a threat for the win come Sunday, assuming the engine can hold on long enough.

Kyle Busch - If Hamlin is the best driver at Phoenix right now, then Kyle Busch is a close second. In the first race on the new track, Rowdy had an engine problem that left him in the garage early and in 36th place. It’s worth noting, however, that Kyle started 34th that day and drove up through the field into the top 5 by about lap 170. In this race last season, Busch led 52 laps and ended up 6th, and followed that up with a dominating race last November, leading 237 of the 319 laps. If there wasn’t a late caution that day, I firmly believe that Rowdy would have cruised to victory. However, he ended up 3rd. Again, the engine problems with the Gibbs cars last week are a bit concerning, but mechanical failures are something you just can’t predict in fantasy racing.

Jimmie Johnson - To put it simply, the “old” Phoenix International Raceway was Jimmie Johnson’s playground. The stats he put up from 2006 to 2011 were borderline ridiculous: over those ten races, “Five Time” never finished worse than 5th (seriously) and ended up in victory lane on four separate occasions. Once this track was reconfigured and repaved, however, the field caught up. The entire Hendrick organization struggled in the first race on the “new” track, and Johnson ended up 14th that day. He followed that with a solid 4th-place effort in this event last season (after leading 55 laps), and then regressed last fall with his 32nd-place finish. As you probably recall, however, that bad finish was due to a tire problem that sent the #48 Chevrolet into the wall. Johnson was running in 7th place at the time. Assuming that that doesn’t happen again, however, you could see this #48 team start off 2-for-2 on Sunday.

Kasey Kahne - Kasey Kahne was the first driver to get a victory on the reconfigured Phoenix International Raceway back in 2011, and that win came during his awesome season-ending run with Red Bull Racing. In my opinion, Hendrick got off to a slow start on the “new” Phoenix, but they should be caught up by now. In this event last season, Kasey ended up 34th, but you have to remember that that was right in the middle of this team’s early season slump/bad luck streak. He was solidly inside the top 5 during that race before  saying hello to the wall around lap 20. Kahne rebounded last November with a solid 4th-place outing, which is also where he qualified.

Kevin Harvick - Harvick was about as good as you can get at Phoenix in 2012. After having arguably the best car in the spring race–he led 88 laps and had a race-high driver rating of 134.7–and finished 2nd, “Happy” came back in the fall and led the last 15 laps in the desert to get his only win of the season. In terms of overall history, Harvick is a three-time winner at Phoenix and has finished 6th or better in four of the last five races here. I see no reason why he wouldn’t be able to make it five of the last six on Sunday.

Should Be Solid

Brad Keselowski - The 2012 champion had one of the best cars here last time around and should be solid once again this weekend. Keselowski led 10 laps in last November’s Phoenix race and ended up 6th. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that as soon as Jimmie Johnson went to the garage, the Blue Deuce started falling back (read: Brad was playing it conservative). Click here to see the Yahoo! chart of these two drivers in that race. Look closely around lap 230 onward. Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe are the best in the business at strategy, and one thing has been clear since the reconfiguration of Phoenix: track position is vital. Brad was 5th in the spring race here last season and should be a great pick once again on Sunday.

Ryan Newman - “The Rocketman” used to be one of the best flat track racers in the series (in my opinion), but he has regressed a little bit. Still, in the last three Phoenix races, Newman has recorded two top 5s, and has finished solidly inside the top 5 in five of the last six events here. For whatever reason, the Stewart-Haas Chevrolets are generally really strong here. It’s going to take a couple really good practice sessions out of this #39 team for me to strongly recommend picking Newman this weekend, but I think a top 10 finish (at least) should be expected out of him on Sunday.

Greg Biffle - The Biff isn’t someone that immediately comes to your mind when the series stops at Phoenix, but he’s been one of only a few drivers that have been solid in every race at this track since it was reconfigured. Biffle ended up 13th in the fall race here back in 2011 and followed that up with 3rd- and 7th-place efforts here last season. He hasn’t led a lap at this track since 2008 but it’s hard to look away from solid finishes.

Matt Kenseth - Phoenix has been one of Kenseth’s worst tracks on the circuit throughout his career, but I think his move to Joe Gibbs Racing should bump his performance up a little bit. He ended up 14th here last fall after finishing 13th in the spring race, which are both better than Matt’s career average finish at this track (17.7). It’s worth noting that in the first race on the “new” Phoenix, Kenseth led 49 laps after starting on the pole but wound up finishing 34th after Brian Vickers wrecked him. It’s safe to say that the #17 would have challenged for the win that day if Vickers wouldn’t have retaliated.

Clint Bowyer - Clint is slowly becoming on the better flat track racers (and just racer in general) in the series. He ended up 28th here last time around, but remember that was only because Jeff Gordon decided to wreck him. Bowyer was running 5th at the time and well on his way to a solid finish in that race. He has only one top 10 finish in the last five Phoenix races, but sometimes history needs to be overlooked. The #15 Toyota should be challenging for at least a top 10 come Sunday.

Sleeper Picks

Juan Montoya - Montoya hasn’t been great since Phoenix has been reconfigured, but he’s been solidly above average and a threat for a top 10 in all three races thus far. Last fall he ended up 12th after qualifying 21st and he was 11th in the spring race. In 12 career starts here, Montoya has finished inside the top 20 in all but two of them. If he puts down a fast qualifying lap on Friday, JPM is definitely one driver to consider as a sleeper for a top 10.

Kurt Busch - Whether it has been the new configuration or the old one, Kurt Busch has had success at Phoenix. He has recorded one victory here (back in 2005) and boasts an impressive 13.3 average finish–good enough for 9th-best in the series. Last fall, Kurt was able to drive the #78 Chevrolet to a solid 8th-place finish after qualifying 6th. The only thing you have to worry about when picking the elder Busch brother is his pit crew, as they could cost him valuable track position throughout the day.

Danica Patrick - Now that Danica has recorded her first top 10 in the Sprint Cup Series, will she be able to make it two in a row at Phoenix? Probably not. Still, she could be a nice sleeper pick this weekend for a couple of reasons. Last time we were here, Patrick was pretty impressive, staying on the lead lap for most of the day and getting all the way up to 13th in the closing laps before the wreck happened. She ended up 17th. Also, Danica’s crew chief, Tony Gibson, knows flat tracks pretty well, and he won a race here in 2010 while on the pit box for Ryan Newman.

"The Champ" Is #1 At Daytona Again

Jimmie Johnson Wins 2013 Daytona 500 [Full Recap and Results]

Jimmie Johnson #48 Car

“Five Time” may have lost the championship last season, but he’s starting off 2013 on the right path, grabbing his second career Daytona 500 victory in his 400th career Sprint Cup start. The race itself was a little eventful, especially early on: on lap 33, a wreck took out many of the favorites. It all started when Kasey Kahne got turned in front of almost the entire field, collecting Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart Jamie McMurray, and Juan Montoya to name a few. From there, the cars basically rode around the track, logging laps, until, on lap 137, Carl Edwards once again ended up with a wrecked race car. Austin Dillon, Trevor Bayne, and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. were also involved. The rest of the 2013 Great American race was uneventful. Matt Kenseth, who led the most laps (86), and teammate Kyle Busch each had car troubles that took them out of the race. The final two laps were a little exciting, but there was no pass for the lead in the last 10 laps or so of the race. Kyle Busch Wins Budweiser Duel #2 [Full Recap and Results]

Kyle Busch #18 Car

The second Budweiser Duel race on Thursday was less eventful than the first, but it’s safe to say that we did learn one thing: track position will be key on Sunday during the Daytona 500. Pole sitter Jeff Gordon led a bunch of laps early but got caught speeding on pit road during green flag pit stops and ended up 12th. Kyle Busch eventually took the lead and didn’t look back from there. On a side note, it was impressive showing by Austin Dillon in this race, who finished 3rd and will start his first career Daytona 500 on Sunday. Full results:
