Pole Sitter Kenseth Paces Happy Hour At Kansas [Full Results + 10-Lap Averages]

Matt Kenseth #20 Car

All practice sessions are now completed at Kansas Speedway for the weekend and it will be interesting to see how the speeds transfer over to the STP 400 race on Sunday. During the practices on Saturday, the track and was cool along with the air, and it is expected to warm up on Sunday for the race. Teams will probably have to adjust on the changing weather and a wrong adjustment could ruin their day pretty quickly. The ten-lap average chart can be found below the full results chart below.

Montoya Fastest in Practice #2 at Kansas [Full Results + 10-Lap Averages]

Juan Montoya #42 Car

The first of two Saturday practice sessions at Kansas Speedway just got over with, and although there may be a little surprise at who was on top of the board, the normal names were littered through the rest of the top 10. The Happy Hour practice session will go from 12:30 to 1:20 this afternoon (eastern time) and the track conditions during that session should be more like race conditions. Important happenings: nothing major to report. Be sure to remember that Jeff Gordon is going to the back because of his wreck in qualifying. The ten-lap average chart can be found below the full speed chart.

Edwards Fastest In 1st Kansas Practice

Carl Edwards #99 Car

The STP 400 this weekend has a different schedule than what most people have gotten used to during the 2013 season thus far. On Friday, the Sprint Cup cars were out on track for a practice, and qualifying will be held later. Then, on Saturday, there are two more practices. The final two practices should be more valuable to fantasy racers than the first, as all of the speeds will be in race trim. Important notes from this session: Kyle Busch hit the wall hard and had to pull out a backup #18 car. He will still start Sunday’s race from the position he qualifies.

Texas NRA 500 Practice #2 (Happy Hour) Results and 10-Lap Averages

Marcos Ambrose #9 Car

Track time is nearly complete now at Texas Motor Speedway. The Sprint Cup teams got over 6 hours of testing/practice this week, so if they don’t have the cars zeroed in for the NRA 500 on Saturday night by now, chances are it’s not going to happen. Important notes in this practice session: Kevin Harvick blew an engine about 20 minutes into Happy Hour and will have to start Saturday night’s race from the rear of the field. He will, however, be able to pick his pit stall based on qualifying. The ten-lap average chart can be found below the practice speeds chart.

Truex Beats Out Four Chevys In First Practice

Texas NRA 500 Practice #1 Results and 10-Lap Averages

Martin Truex, Jr. #56 Car

This week’s NRA 500 at Texas Motor Speedway is a Saturday night race, but because of the weekend schedule and the Nationwide Series race, the Sprint Cup drivers had to practice on Friday afternoon. This track is a 1.5-mile d-shaped oval, and because this is the first official night race of the season, NASCAR allowed the teams to test for 3.5 hours on Thursday afternoon. Important notes in this practice session: Joey Logano had some sort of oil leak, but eventually got back on track and the team didn’t seem too worried about it. The ten-lap average chart can be found below the practice speeds chart.

Kyle Busch Gets Win in Wild Fontana Race [Full Auto Club 400 Results and Recap]

Credit: Chris Graythen/Getty Images

It almost seemed scripted. With half a lap to go, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano were fighting for the lead–and bumping each other for the second week in a row. They made contact, going into the wall, and Kyle Busch benefited the most, taking the win he deserved. Busch, who led 125 of the 200 laps, got Joe Gibbs Racing into victory lane for the first time at Auto Club Speedway. Logano finished 6th, and Denny Hamlin got put on a stretcher. On Monday, it was reported that Hamlin has a compression fracture in his back.

Other Important Happenings:

Lap 29 – David Stremme spins out, bringing out the first caution. The two guys who started in the back, Brad Keselowski and Greg Biffle, were up to 14th and 18th, respectively.
Lap 37 – Caution #2, Timmy Hill blows an engine. Quite a few drivers reported either hitting the wall or hitting something on the track at this time, too, including Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, and Kyle Busch.
Lap 71 – Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick are caught speeding on pit road. Busch was in the mid-20s at the time and Harvick was inside the top 5.
Lap 90 – Debris caution. During the pit stops, Brad Keselowski is caught speeding on pit road and has to restart at the rear of the field (31st).
Lap 104 – Paul Menard, who was running round the top 15, hits the wall and has to pit because of a flat tire. He goes a lap down.
Lap 112 – Matt Kenseth makes an unscheduled pit stop because of a possible rear tire going down. He was running 10th when him and Greg Biffle made contact a lap or two before.
Lap 116 – Joe Nemechek bounces off the wall and brings out another caution. This is perfect timing for Matt Kenseth, who gets his lap back. Paul Menard took the wave around. During pit stops, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s crew had some trouble with a tire and he lost a ton of spots. He was running 3rd and came out 22nd.
Lap 130 – Marcos Ambrose has a flat tire and brings out another caution. He was running in 17th at the time.
Lap 164 – During green flag stops, Mark Martin is caught speeding on pit road. He was running around 20th at the time.
Lap 170 – Marcos Ambrose blows out a tire and brings out another caution. Most cars pit and there are a bunch on different tires strategies for the run to the checkers.
Lap 176 – Mark Martin breaks something in his rear end and goes across the track, taking out David Gilliland.
Lap 185 – Clint Bowyer blows an engine to bring out another caution. He was running 10th at the time. Everyone pitted except for Kyle Busch, Logano, Stewart, Kurt Busch, Keselowski, Harvick, Bowyer, and McMurray. Newman gets caught speeding on pit road.
Lap 194 – Brad Keselowski is off pace. He was running 10th.
Lap 200 - Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin are fighting for the lead when they make contact. Logano hits the wall hard and Hamlin spins into the inside wall, also with a very, very hard hit. Kyle Busch passes both for the win.

Martin and Bowyer Fastest In Auto Club 400 Happy Hour [Full Results + Ten-Lap Averages]

Mark Martin #55 Car

This weekend’s final practice session ended with a couple of Michael Waltrip Racing Toyotas on top, as Mark Martin and Clint Bowyer paced the field. They were followed by another Toyota in Matt Kenseth’s #20. Happy Hour was the one practice session that was closest to what Sunday’s track conditions will be closest to, in my opinion, and should hold more weight than other speeds. Nothing major happened during Happy Hour. The ten-lap average chart can be found below the practice speeds chart.

Biffle Fastest In Practice #2 At Fontana [Full Results + Ten-Lap Averages]

Greg Biffle #16 Car

If anyone was worried about Greg Biffle starting in the back on Sunday, he may have put those worries to rest today by being the fastest man in practice. The #16 Ford did have an engine failure on Friday, but it has been wicked fast ever since. Another nice surprise this weekend has been A.J. Allmendinger, as you can see below. There were no major happenings in practice to report. The ten-lap average chart can be found below the practice speeds chart.

Auto Club 400 Starting Lineup

Denny Hamlin #11 Car

Qualifying isn’t quite as important at Auto Club Speedway as it is at, say, Bristol, but there is still some advantage to putting down a fast lap on Friday, such as a good pit selection. Denny Hamlin was the fastest man in town today, grabbing his third career pole (and second straight) at this 2-mile California race track. Notable drivers that will have to start from the rear of the field on Sunday are Greg Biffle and Brad Keselowski, both due to engine changes. They qualified 2nd and 3rd, respectively, and will get those spots when it comes to pit stall selection.

Bowyer Fastest In Fontana Practice #1 [Full Results]

Clint Bowyer #15 Car

Auto Club Speedway is a big, 2-mile racetrack that could be viewed as a “horsepower track”. It should be no surprise then that the bigger organizations were the ones that dominated the speed charts on Friday. Most of these fast laps were recorded in qualifying trim, and not very many teams made any significant race runs during this session. Important happening: early on, Greg Biffle’s #16 Ford was smoking pretty heavily, and it was determined he had an engine problem. Click here for the full story. Also, right after practice, Brad Keselowski tweeted that the #2 team will change the engine in his Ford as well. Full story here.
